Your first reformer Pilates class: what to expect
The machine looks impressive the first time you walk into a reformer studio. Here is how a first class goes, step by step, so you arrive relaxed.
Before the class
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. You'll check in, leave your things and pick a reformer.
- Tell the teacher it's your first class, and mention any injury or pain. They'll keep an eye on you.
- Wear fitted clothes so the teacher can see your position, and bring grip socks if the studio asks for them.
Getting to know the reformer
The reformer has a sliding carriage, springs underneath, a footbar at one end and straps at the other. The teacher will show you how to get on and off safely, and how to change the springs.
More springs usually means more resistance, but not always "harder": some exercises are more difficult with lighter springs because you need more control. Don't worry, you'll be told which ones to use.
How the class goes
A class usually lasts 45 to 55 minutes. It often starts with footwork, lying on your back and pushing the carriage with your feet, to warm up. Then come exercises for the arms, legs, core and back, in different positions.
The pace is controlled. It's normal to feel your muscles shake: that's the work. If you lose the movement, stop, breathe and start again. Nobody is watching you as much as you think.
After the class
You may feel your core and legs for a day or two. That's normal after a first class. Drink water, and try to book a second class within the week: the second one always feels much easier, because you already know the machine.

I'm pregnant or injured, can I go?
Please check with your doctor and the studio before booking. Some studios offer adapted classes.
What if I'm late?
Each studio has its own rules for late arrivals, and some don't let you in once the class has started. Contact the studio if you're running late.
