Yoga styles explained: vinyasa, hatha, yin and more

On a yoga schedule, the names can be confusing. Here are the main styles you'll find in Dubai's studios, what a class feels like, and who each one is for.

Hatha

Hatha is the base of most modern yoga. Poses are held for a few breaths, with time to set up each one properly. The pace is calm and the class often ends with a short relaxation.

For you if: you're starting, or you want a balanced class that isn't too intense.

Vinyasa

In vinyasa, poses are linked together in a flow, one movement per breath. It's dynamic, it warms you up and every teacher builds their own sequence, so no two classes are the same.

For you if: you like to move, you want to sweat a little, you get bored quickly.

Power yoga

A stronger, faster version of vinyasa, with more strength work. Expect planks, lunges and arm balances.

For you if: you want yoga that feels like a workout.

Yin

Yin is slow and quiet. You stay in seated or lying poses for several minutes, with your muscles relaxed, to work on flexibility and let go.

For you if: you want to unwind, or balance out running, Pilates or a stressful week.

Restorative

Even gentler than yin. Bolsters, blankets and blocks support your body so you can rest completely in each pose.

For you if: you're tired, stressed, or recovering.

Hot yoga

Yoga in a heated room. The heat makes you sweat and feel more flexible. Drink well before and after, and take it easy in your first class.

For you if: you love intensity and heat.

Not sure which one to pick?
